The Republican Party doesn’t want to eliminate abortion: Don’t let Republicans fool you

The Republican Party has tried to convince you election after election that they want to make abortion illegal. Nothing could be further from the truth. They continue to use this issue to
deceive you for two reasons: to get your votes and your contributions…and to enable them to put Republican candidates’ pamphlets in our beloved parish churches.

Consider the facts: Roe vs. Wade, the case that declared that a woman’s right to an abortion is protected by the United States Constitution in certain circumstances, was decided by the Supreme Court in 1973. The Opinion was written by a Republican Supreme Court Justice who had been appointed to the Supreme Court by a Republican President.

Since Roe vs. Wade, the Republicans have controlled the White House for 28 years and yet Roe vs. Wade is still the law of the land. The fact is, Republicans don’t want to change the
law. They want to continue to use it as a devious means to rouse you to vote for their candidates and contribute money to their campaigns or super-PACs.

But, of course, the Republican-dominated Supreme Court certainly changed the law when it suited their super-rich constituents. Consider just two examples:

Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission (2010) that permitted corporate “dark money” to invade and thus influence (that is, buy) our elections.
Janus vs. American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees Council 31 (2018) rendered illegal a union’s requiring its members to pay dues limited to the union’s cost
in bargaining on their members’ behalf. In other words, this decision permits members to avoid paying their fair share of the costs of the union’s obtaining benefits for them; thus, undermining the power of the working person’s collective bargaining right.

Remember Church teaching, especially the Papal Encyclical Rerum Novarum that stated, perhaps in the stilted language of its time:

The most important of all are workingmen’s unions, for these
virtually include all the rest. History attests what excellent results were brought about by the artificers’ guilds of olden times. They were the means of affording not only many advantages to the workmen….Such unions should be suited to the requirements of this our age…,but it [is] greatly to be desired that they should become more
numerous and more efficient

And perhaps more to the point, Pope Leo wrote: “All such societies, being free to exist, have the further right to adopt such rules and organization as may best conduce to the attainment of their respective objects.” Yes, unions have the right to adopt their own rules in all places except the Republican-dominated United States Supreme Court!

Abortion flourishes where a pregnant woman is afraid of her ability to raise her child safely, securely and well. If you want to stop abortion, vote for the Party that fights to make these goals attainable for poor pregnant women through expanded health care for the poor, free and universal education and affordable child-care for working women. That’s the Democratic
Party and that’s how you stop abortion!
